The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US on five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures that were at the heart of efforts to enact laws governing American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in criticizing the decision.
The bans were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and disinformation.
This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.
